How I work
I work with oil paint mainly on canvas in the surrounding countryside, sometimes my garden, with occasional forays to the North Norfolk coast.
Although I am a landscape painter there is also an abstract quality in the work. Abstracting from landscape and still being tied to it's immense visual impact is a constant challenge. I try to find the place in my work where nature sparks off the imagination, then the image becomes stronger, the colours richer and sometimes the painting seems to develop a life of it's own.
Painting is, for me, compulsive but by the act of painting I also hope to create an image in which others can share my perception of what is out there.
There are certain fields and areas to which I repeatedly return at certain times of the year, particularly at harvest. That sense of place in my work is very important to me.
